HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

Janelle Monae Makes Her Big Screen Debut As She joins Hollywood’s Elite in NASA film Hidden Figures.

Grammy Award nominee Janelle Monae will be in great company as she makes her Hollywood debut alongside Academy award winner Octavia Spencer, and Golden Globe winners Taraji P. Henson and Kevin Costner in a film that is sure to be a game changer as it was a monumental moment for American history.

The film is based on the forthcoming Margot Lee Shetterly book Hidden Figures: The Story is about a group of African-American female mathematicians who provided NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions,” according to THR.

Monae plays Mary Jackson, the youngest of the three mathematicians. Octavia Spencer will play Dorothy Vaughan, Taraji P. Henson will portray Katherine Johnson and Kevin Costner will be the lead of NASA’s space program.

The movie is set to be released on January 13, 2017, which is timed to the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Who Helped Win the Space Race, which is due for release in September.

The mission took place amidst the Civil Rights Movement. The team of Black mathematicians were segregated from their White counterparts and were often referred to by fellow NASA Staffers as “colored computers.” The Friendship 7 Mission set off into orbit in 1962, resulting in the first American to orbit the Earth. John Glenn, the astronaut who completed the daunting endeavor, wouldn’t have encountered such a successful mission without the computing mind power of the trio of African-American women who devised mathematical theories that would launch rockets into space.

Further details about the movie remain scare, though according to iMDB.
Hidden Figures will be Monae’s first live action feature film role. She was previously featured as a voice actress in Rio 2 as Dr. Monae and is also set to appear in the drama Moonlight.
