A mass funeral procession for Muhammad Ali has begun in his hometown Louisville, with a hearse carrying the boxing legend’s remains heading into the streets where thousands gathered to say goodbye.

Chanting “Ali” “Ali” “Ali” and pumping their fists in the air, some crying in the video of the farewell procession. It’s enough to bring tears to your eyes as the magnitude of the moment sets in. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali is laid to rest in his home city of Louisville, Kentucky.

Onlookers cheered his cortege as it passed by on its way to a city cemetery where he was then buried in a private service for family and friends.

The ex-heavyweight champion and civil rights activist died last Friday aged 74.

An interfaith memorial service for the boxer is to be held shortly at a major sports centre.

Actor Will Smith, ex-boxers Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson are among the pallbearers, while former President Bill Clinton is to deliver one of the eulogies.

World leaders and celebrities are among 18,000 people expected to attend the service in Ali’s home city of Louisville, Kentucky, with the ceremony to be broadcast to millions of viewers around the world.

President Barack Obama, who is missing the funeral to attend his daughter Malia’s high school graduation ceremony, described Ali as “an icon” and a “personal hero” who transformed “not just the world of sport, but the world as a whole”.
