Scottie Pippen: “I Was LeBron James Before LeBron James”

| June 30, 2015 | 0 Comments

The debate on who is actually the better ball player: Michael Jordan or LeBron James continues. Jordan certainly has more titles than James but when it comes to personal records James is gaining quickly as he recently broke Karl Malone’s career scoring record and still have close to 5 to 7 years in the NBA in front of him, arguably.

One thing is sure, when it’s all said and done James will have his place among the greats in NBA history.

While the legacy of LeBron James and his place among the greats in NBA history is debated, Scottie Pippen is rarely—if ever—mentioned in the same breath.

According to the former Chicago Bulls star, not only does he deserve a seat at the table, but it belonged to him first.

“I was LeBron James before LeBron James,” Bulls great Scottie Pippen told Northeast Ohio Media Group. “It’s not even close.”

Pippen, who played alongside Michael Jordan for 12 seasons is considered one of the best small forwards of all time. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team eight consecutive times and the All-NBA First Team three times. He was a seven-time NBA All-Star and was the NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1994. He played a key role on both the 1992 Chicago Bulls Championship team and the 1996 Chicago Bulls Championship team which were selected as two of the greatest teams in NBA history.

“I’m no slouch, but when comparing LeBron’s game, I’m usually left out,” he said.
James has stated over the years how much he watched Pippen’s game when growing up and how he incorporated facets into his own repertoire. Still, Pippen is a forgotten man when the conversations ramp up.

“They want to compare him to the greatest, whether it be Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson, but he’s more closer to myself,” Pippen said. “It’s natural for folks to say that, but if you look at how he plays the game and how I played the game, you’ll see more similarities with us.”

According to reports James has admitted to spending quite some time breaking down and studying the skill set of Scottie Pippen.
