Celebrating the life of Poet , author , educator and activist Maya Angelou

Phenomenal woman Maya Angelou was laid to rest Saturday June 7, 2014 in a memorial service at Wake Forest University where she served as the Reynolds Professor of American studies at the university since 1982.

Attendees of the service included dignitaries from around the world including Oprah Winfrey who helped plan the funeral , first lady of the United States of America Michelle Obama and former president of the Unites States Bill Clinton.

Clinton , who like Angelou grew up in Arkansas , said at the service that her books and poems of Southern life struck a chord with him early in his career.

Angelou wrote the poem “On the Pulse of Morning” in honor of president Clinton and recited it at his 1993 inauguration. She was the second poet in history to read a poem at a presidential inauguration and the first black woman.

An Emotional Oprah Winfrey said Angelou was more than a mentor to her but a mother/sister and friend since my early 20’s “she was there for me always guiding me through some of the most important years of my life” Winfrey said
