Beyoncé is the recipient of this year’s CFDA Fashion Icon Award. The honor was presented to the singer last night by designer Diane Von Furstenberg.

“I feel so much love and I feel so proud right now,” she said while accepting her award in a Michael Jackson inspired pinstriped, crystal-embellished Givenchy suit and a “Formation”-style wide-brim hat. “Thank you guys for this incredible honor.”

In her speech, Beyoncé recognized her mother and grandmother, who introduced her to fashion. She revealed they were seamstresses and made clothes by hand when times were hard.

“As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life. It’s effect on me actually started before I was born,” she recalled. “Most of you guys don’t know this, but my grandmother was a seamstress. My grandparents did not have enough money, they could not afford my mother’s Catholic school tuition. So my grandmother sewed clothes for the priests and the nuns and made the uniform for the students in exchange for my mother’s education,” she said.

“When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black country curvy girls,” Beyoncé said. “And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.” Beyoncé revealed her mother designed many costumes for Destiny’s Child, as well as her prom dress, first CFDA dress and first Grammy dress.

Bey even made a nod to everyone’s favorite Mother of Dragons, Game of Thrones’s Daenerys Targaryen: “When I wore these clothes on stage, I felt like Khaleesi.”

After thanking her mother in the audience, she extended her gratitude to all the designers present: “I want to say thank you to every designer that works tirelessly to make people feel like they can write their own story,” she said.
